Background of the Study :
Social-emotional learning (SEL) has become an essential element in modern education, addressing not only academic development but also the emotional and social competencies required for success in a rapidly changing world. In the context of online education among secondary school students in Maiduguri West LGA, Borno State, the integration of SEL initiatives is particularly significant. The transition to digital learning environments has brought about challenges related to student engagement, mental health, and interpersonal interactions, making it imperative to incorporate strategies that support emotional well-being and social development (Abdullahi, 2023). SEL programs in online education aim to equip students with skills such as self-awareness, empathy, and effective communication, which are crucial for navigating both academic and personal challenges. The shift from traditional classroom settings to online platforms has amplified the need for robust SEL frameworks. In online education, students often experience feelings of isolation and disconnection, which can adversely affect their learning outcomes and overall well-being. Integrating SEL into the digital curriculum offers a proactive approach to mitigating these issues by fostering a supportive learning community where students can interact, share experiences, and develop essential life skills (Ahmed, 2024). Moreover, SEL initiatives provide teachers with the tools to create inclusive and empathetic online classrooms, enhancing the overall educational experience for secondary school students in Maiduguri West LGA. Recent research highlights the positive correlation between effective SEL programs and improved academic performance, reduced behavioral issues, and enhanced social interactions among students (Mohammed, 2023). As online education continues to evolve, the role of SEL becomes increasingly prominent in ensuring that students are not only academically competent but also emotionally resilient. This study seeks to explore the impact of social-emotional learning in online education, examining how SEL interventions influence student engagement, academic performance, and overall well-being. By evaluating the implementation and outcomes of SEL programs, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating social-emotional learning into online educational practices, thereby contributing to a more holistic approach to education in Maiduguri West LGA. Furthermore, the digital environment offers unique opportunities for innovative SEL strategies, such as virtual counseling sessions, interactive group activities, and digital storytelling. These approaches not only foster emotional intelligence but also create a sense of community among students who may otherwise feel disconnected in a virtual setting. The continuous evaluation of SEL in online education is therefore critical in adapting to the evolving needs of students and ensuring that their social and emotional development is nurtured alongside academic growth.
Statement of the Problem :
Despite the acknowledged benefits of social-emotional learning, implementing effective SEL strategies in online education among secondary school students in Maiduguri West LGA remains challenging. One significant problem is the limited availability of structured SEL programs specifically tailored for online environments, which often results in a lack of consistent support for students’ emotional and social development (Abdullahi, 2023). Many schools struggle to integrate SEL into the digital curriculum due to resource constraints, insufficient teacher training, and the inherent difficulties of fostering interpersonal connections in virtual classrooms. These challenges are exacerbated by the high levels of stress and anxiety reported among students in online settings, which can negatively impact both academic performance and overall well-being (Ahmed, 2024). Moreover, the transition to online education has highlighted gaps in communication and support systems, making it difficult for educators to monitor and address the social-emotional needs of students effectively. The absence of face-to-face interactions limits the opportunities for real-time emotional support and can lead to a sense of isolation, further impeding the development of critical SEL competencies (Mohammed, 2023). Additionally, there is a dearth of empirical data on the effectiveness of SEL interventions in virtual learning environments, which hinders the ability to develop and implement evidence-based strategies. This study seeks to investigate the impact of social-emotional learning on online education, identifying the specific challenges faced by secondary school students in Maiduguri West LGA. By analyzing the current practices and potential barriers to effective SEL integration, the research aims to provide comprehensive insights and recommendations for enhancing social-emotional support in digital classrooms. Addressing these issues is crucial for creating an online learning environment that not only fosters academic achievement but also promotes the holistic development of students.
